The year started with a highly competitive game of barefoot bowls at North Epping Bowling Club! Recuperation included plenty of pizza and visits to the bar.

There were plenty of smiles on the happy faces of the young boys and girls who attended a CCA holiday program run recently at 'The Shack'.  Epping Rotarians Peter Garrard, Alan Cunningham and Trevor McAlister led a group of 15 youngsters through the process of building four of these fun machines.

Record numbers (45) turned out to give Terrys Creek an autumn clean! Epping Rotarians with the help of Epping Presbyterian Boys Brigade, Eastwood Epping Leos and local volunteers extracted the usual range of shopping trolleys, old tyres, plastic and more plastic from the creek. Thank you everyone, particularly to master coordinator, Ian Bittner! A job well done.

At last Monday’s meeting (15/8) members were blown away by the confidence and composure of two outstanding young persons following their attendance at two quite different, but formative, programs assisted by Epping Rotary.

Annie attended the NSW Youth Parliament and Angus attended the Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN) http://rotarydistrict9685.org.au/Page/rypen, a program that develops "life skills" and motivation to help teenagers cope with the challenges of a very competitive future.

Both were grateful for the support from Epping Rotary and both were impressive as they provided a thoughtful and stimulating perspective on their experiences and understanding of current issues.

In addition, Else gave an excellent summary of the work that The Shack (http://www.theshack.org.au/) undertakes to support the youth of the Epping area. The importance of this service was very clear from the range of activities and services provided often on a 1:1 basis due to the significant issues that the young person may be dealing with. Else's presentation made it so clear why we as Epping Rotary are committed to fundraising for this vital service in our local community.

These impressive young people are examples of the youth in our community and we as a Club are proud that we can support them in a range of ways.

PRESIDENT PETER'S  Rotary Year in Review: 2015-16 Theme "Be a gift to the World "

Everyone of us has something to give. We can give our talent, our knowledge, our abilities and our effort.  We can give our dedication. Through Rotary we can take these gifts and make a genuine difference in the lives of others and in our world. Through Rotary we can leave behind something that is real and lasting.

How did Epping Rotary work towards achieving this goal of being a gift to the world?

Firstly, by being a Rotary club that challenges the emphasis on material comforts and a sense of entitlement to leading a comfortable life through focusing on what we can do for the community.
Secondly,  by focusing on the Rotary ideal of service to others in our community in which we live in Epping.  This ideal of service is one that permeates through Rotary in every avenue and project that is planned.

What is it like taking a large team to Africa?  It has probably been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life. In mid February, I began leading Rotary members from all over the East Coast of the United States through Ghana. I’ve tried to give the team a warm Ghanaian welcome like I’ve received on my earlier trips. A large trip is a real blessing because each person sees Ghana and our work in a different way.

Throughout India and around the world, Rotary clubs are celebrating a major milestone: India has gone three years without a new case of polio. The last reported case was a two-year-old girl in West Bengal on 13 January 2011. To mark this historic triumph, Rotary clubs illuminated landmarks and iconic structures throughout the country with four simple but powerful words, "India is polio free."
